I'd like to learn whatever I can,
largely for practical things like bowls or tools. Would you like to meet somewhere and discuss it?

[Muffet is very punctual, showing up precisely on time despite the lack of available clocks on the island, waiting patiently by the rock.]

[She's brought a few things with her on the off-chance that they might be useful, including a small woodsaw in her pack that she's been carrying around since her arrival, as well as some cookies. Learning is probably hungry work, after all...]

[ He's only a couple of minutes late, knapsack slung over his shoulder, hatchet on belt, really to shared his woodworking knowledge!

He might've had a, huh, less than pleasant reaction when he first met Muffet, but she hasn't been anything but nice to him. Even Magnus can get past his problems with spiders, for the most part. Besides, he's happy to meet another woodworking enthusiast!]

Hey, sorry I'm late.

[She greets him with a polite little wave and a smile, adding:]

No apologies needed, dearie- it's not terribly easy trying to be on time here, given that I don't think this island has any clocks. Was there anything you wanted to do before we got started with our lesson?

Nah, not really. Cleared up the rest of the day.

So, huh, if there a place we can do this, or... [ Way to not sound shady about it, Magnus. Wording.]

Got some stuff to get started, and it's a pretty okay day out, but if you wanna go somewhere...

[Muffet is tactful enough not to comment on the phrasing, at least.]

We probably ought not to block off the path, but I believe there's a nice enough clearing a few steps over to the left that wouldn't be in anyone's way...

[She gestures off to the side, and there does in fact appear to be a small break in the treeline nearby, a flat little patch of grass where they could sit down and get to work.]

Oh, yeah, that works.

[ He adjusts the bag on his shoulder, starting to make his way to the clearing. It's only now hitting him...Muffet's number of arms. Does that make things better, or worse? Does he need to account for that many hands in his teachings? Shit, he hasn't planned for this!

Still, once they reach the clearing, he drops his back and surveys the area. Yeah, this'll do nicely. A little open air lesson! He's into it.

Kneeling down, he starts rooting through his bag, the sound of several...whatever he's got in there, jingling and jangling all about. ]

So, huh, remind me what you wanted to make?

[Muffet sits down neatly, looking amused at his enthusiasm.]

Well, I'd wanted to start with the basics- bowls, and ideally other sorts of utensils. I've been making do thus far, but they're never quite as well-done as I'd like...

[She pulls a small bowl out of her bag to show him an example, and yeah she really wasn't kidding about being bad at this. It's clearly been done by someone steady-handed and meticulous, but just as clearly someone who had no real idea what they were doing beyond 'hold sharp thing, carve extra wood bits off'.]

Oh! I mean, that's not that bad. [ For a beginner, anyway.

He sits down on the grass,taking out a small block of wood and a few simple tools.]

I mean, you wanna start simple. And stuff like that's pretty basic. When you get the shapes down, you can start thinkin' about a making it all fancy and stuff. That takes a little more time to get right.

[ He sets everything down on the grass neatly, so that she can see each individual tool. He doesn't have much - a carving knife, a small hammer, his hatchet, and a couple of others.]

The hardest part here is getting the right tools, since, well, this place doesn't exactly have a Fantasy Costco or anything.

[ He scratches at his beard and mumbles, mostly to himself.]

Maybe the Storyteller guy could magic up some stuff...

[Muffet nods, listening carefully.]

That makes sense... it can be a bit hard to keep it steady sometimes, but I'm not certain if that's my inexperience or because I'm working with improper tools. Perhaps both.

[It's probably both.]

The Storyteller is usually happy to trade that sort of thing for a story or two, if you want to tell some the next time there's the opportunity.

Yeah, might be both. But you can nail down something simple like this in a jiffy.

[ He picks up the bowl she made.]

See, you've got to bring out the stuff from the wood. And you're almost there. It's a pretty simple shape, but to make it perfect you need a lot of patience and time.

And something to sand it down with would help. Which, huh, maybe we should ask the Storyteller dude for.

Hm... What kinds of things could be used to sand down wood? My first guess is, well, sandpaper- but since we might need to improvise here, given the lack of supplies...

I mean, sandpaper, yeah, and files? Hmmm.

[ He scratches at his beard, frowning in thought.]

Probably some coarse beach stones? But those are gonna rip the wood right apart, and--

You know, maybe we could start more simple. Sanding stuff down is more of aesthetic purposes, but a nice hand-carved, natural bowl's got its charm.

[Smart move, Magnus.]

[Muffet nods, picking up one of the pieces of coconut shell she brought with her.]

Is there anything in particular you'd recommend while working with these, as opposed to other kinds of wood? Given how many of them we have around the place, it seems important not to let them go to waste.

What do you mean? The type of wood and stuff?

[ He keeps rubbing at his chin, humming in thought.]

I mean, there's a lot of stuff around here. And the type of wood depends on what you want to make. You need something to proof the wood if you're using it for food and drink and stuff, or it's all gonna rot real fast. You don't want that.

[ Seems like Muffet's really got his focus with this, as he's clearly making plans and lists in his head.

Man, he really, really wishes he still had his pocket workshop. Not to mention he could work on much more complicated stuff than just dishes and bowls and whatever. This place needs a proper woodworking business or workshop for all!]

Hmm, and how does one proof wood, exactly?

[Food and drink is definitely relevant, given how much cooking and baking she does.]

Huh, well, there's lacquer and other stuff. Nnnnone of which we really have lying around.

[ He scratches at the back of his head. At this rate, he might as well make a grocery list to hand out to the Storyteller. ]

Well, this is annoying as hell.

[She smiles in rueful understanding.]

I'm regrettably familiar with the feeling.

[ He crosses his arms, tapping his fingers on his bulging bicep. ]

It's a pain in the ass. I have a perfectly good pocket workshop back home but didn't bring it with me.

[ He needs to learn to contextualize the goddamn things he says. ]

[Muffet tilts her head, curious.]

Do you mean a collection of tools that can be carried in your pockets, or are you referring to something a bit more like a dimensional box? At home, we have technology that allows us to store things away without needing to carry them around, but I don't think anyone's ever managed to fit an entire room in there.

The second one.

[ Magic, yo. Interplanar...interdimensional? Pocket dimension magic?? He doesn't know the details, okay, he's not a magic user.]

Just a whole dang workshop, right in my pocket. But I left it in my other pants.

That's quite impressive. At least it didn't fall out of your pocket on the way here- it would be a terrible shame to lose something like that.

Yup. Not sure I could buy another one of those...

[ He has no idea where he could find Garfield nowadays, and, honestly, he's not sure he'd want to anyway.]

But hey, we can still go through the basics, and just try and get more stuff to work with when the Storyteller pops in.
