[the next time Newt comes over, he's in the middle of reaching into his backpack for his chalk while walking over, so he almost doesn't notice the Knight sitting on the ground at first. He slows to a stop in front of the stone, letting out a triumphant 'aha!' when he finds the chalk he was looking for. He starts to take another step forward, but freezes in his tracks when he notices someone else sitting there.

There's a beat, two, and a blink.]

Uh...hi?

[ They look up at his voice, standing up to bow (because it's only polite) then...

Hmm. They don't know what the person they were writing replies to looks like, and they don't know the sound of their voice nor their name.

They turn to the rock and then tap the relevant conversation with their nail, before looking at him expectantly.

Does...does this work...? Did they get the right person??

After a moment, they write on the rock. ]

[ As if that explains anything. ]

[Newt watches as they bow, bowing awkwardly back in return????? He blinks as they tap the conversation, before adding to it. His eyes shoot up to his hairline.]

Oh! [Newt looks down at them, now, his expression going from confused and uncertain to a wide grin] Damn! So that's what you meant, huh? [he immediately drops down into a squat to get a better look at them, resting his elbows on his knees after pushing his glasses up further on his nose]

That's so cool! Are all bugs your size where you're from?

[ He bows back to them, crouches down to address them, and that kind of consideration - and curiosity - pleases them immensely.

They've spent enough time around all these people to understand that cool is a positive indicator rather than just a description of temperature, and they stand up a little straighter.

Are all bugs your size? They shake their head to indicate a no, chalking down a few more words. ]

[ And since they've got a handy canvas right there, they draw him a picture, to show him what they mean. The lines are presumably a wonky comparison of height; some things are the same everywhere, whether it's bugs or humans, it seems.

If Newt has a good memory, one of those figures might seem...familiar. ]

[It's...honestly, it's fascinating to watch them work. He opens his mouth to ask another question, but pauses as the Knight starts to draw that picture. When they get to the Hollow Knight, Newt's eyebrows shoot up to his hairline] Oh, wait, shit, I know that guy!

[he sounds excited, shoving his glasses further up onto his nose again before leaning over to tap the picture of the Hollow Knight] I met them, like, a couple days ago! [nine is a little more than a couple, Newt. Anyway, he wrinkles his nose a bit, frowning a little, but it's more out of confusion than anything] They said they didn't do anything for fun.

If he's going to know their sibling, then they should probably...tell him a little of...why they are the way they are. It will help in understanding, they think.

[Newt watches as the Knight writes out their response, looking at first relieved and pleased that bugs and the Knight themself has things that are fun. But...when they come to the bit about their sibling, his brows draw together again.]

What, uh...what purpose, exactly? Anything I should, like...be aware of or watch out for?

[he leans back a bit so he can sit, now, crisscrossing his legs in front of himself and resting his elbows on his knees again.] Because not gonna lie, dude, that sounds like some super-soldier, child-assassin shit. Like they weren't allowed to have fun or anything because of that. Which is fucked up? [his voice cracks a bit as it itches higher] Like...super fucked up?

[ It's kind of massively fucked up, yes. They're not about to impart their whole life story to a relative stranger, but, well.

[ It's hard to convey weariness when they have no actual expression to make it with, but it sure is there anyway. ]

[ They got impaled by them once but...honestly that was their fault, really, not their sibling's. (They choose to think of it that way because they are certainly not going to blame their sibling for it, even if part o them wants to.) It probably won't happen to anyone else. ]

[Newt just....watches with something like dawning horror as the Knight explains. His eyes are wide behind his glasses, and by the end of that, his face is twisted into something like shock, horror, and just general upset sadness.] ....holy shit.

[he jerks his gaze back to the Knight] I mean, I was right but I didn't want to be right? Because that really is, like...super fucked up? Who does that?!

[his voice jumps at the end, cracking, as his expression starts to twist into something like outrage] What kind of ginormous supervillian-esque asshole raises a kid like that?! [his arms spread wide, anger starting to etch its way onto his face] You have to legit be the worst person in the universe to do that to someone! Especially a kid! Or anyone! And raising someone that way? That's, like...straight up psychopathy! You can't do that to someone--that shit is so fucked! It's wrong!

[he's probably preaching to the choir, but he's so outraged and ranting at this point, hands almost flailing as he gestures, voice cracking in his anger, that it doesn't occur to him to check himself.]

What kind of psychotic, disgusting, morally-bankrupt, Donald Trump motherfucker looks at a kid and goes "yes, I'm going to treat this child like a possession and rob them of anything good in their life before they can even comprehend what's happening to them!?"

[ That's a lot of new and very angry words, which they're both pleased and slightly concerned by.

But they like his reaction, because in some ways it matches their own. That deep down seething indignation, that anger for their sibling's unfair treatment. ]

[ That hidden memory aside. But that's something they don't want to elaborate on. Not yet. It's still too painful to dwell on, in its own way. ]

[Once again, Newt watches as the Knight writes out their reply. There's a low feeling of rage bubbling in his stomach]

Yeah, dude, understatement! [he throws his hands up, all shaking energy now as he pushes to his feet and starts pacing] There are always other ways to do things! You don't sacrifice a child, no matter how justified you try to make yourself sound! It's just--[his fingers find his way into his hair, tugging in frustration] --it's just evil!

[he pulls his fingers out of his hair, turning to look at the Knight briefly] Is that guy still alive? He can't hurt them any more, right?
