Farspeech stones

[Well, Zidane had been here for a few weeks so far. No matter what, he was determined to get back home and help the others trapped here, no matter how long it took. And yet occasionally, he'd get a moment where he really missed home and wondered if he really might have to stay here for a while. Still, dwelling on it would not get him home. So for now, he tried to distract himself with what was going on by exploring and helping rebuild from the earthquake. And one day, an idea came to him....]

You know, unless I've missed it, I don't think I've seen a theater in this place. If there is, maybe one of you guys can direct me to it? If not, then we need to fix that! Luckily for you guys, I used to be part of the best performer troupe in all of Gaia! I know all about this kind of stuff.

So how 'bout it, everyone? How about a place where we can put on some plays? Maybe other types of performances too if that's your thing!

Well, that's no skin off my nose. I was just thinking of the small amount of time we spend feeling homesick, down or even just bored. Not all of us are gonna be on board but they can think what they want.

I'm not saying don't do it, I'm just giving you context.

[Her tone is dull and kind of bored. It's obvious this isn't something she thinks about a lot.]

Just y'know, if you just showed up here, you should make sure you have a house and food before you go doing performances or whatever.

[Just as well she can't see. Because Zidane would be frowning at her very hard right now.]

Um.......I'm already one step ahead of you on that.

C'mon, nobody is gonna wake up in a weird place where there is no obvious way home and where you have to work to survive and have their first thought as, "Hey, guys! I just arrived here! I want set up a theater!"

[That's most people's reactions to her, to be fair.]

Kinda think you're underestimating how smart some people here are. Because we've had stupider. Lots of people don't get that this place means survival first.

Well, I guess that might make sense if we're talking about anyone was really sheltered and never had to fight for their life before coming here. But you know what? I've also kinda noticed that there's a handful of smart-asses who think they're making a really good point but don't get that survival isn't just about basic needs and trying not to get killed.

Well, it might be for them. I dunno.

[She knows he can't see her, but that doesn't stop her from narrowing her eyes at the stone.]

Yeah, maybe it is. Or y'know, they're just prioritizing being not dead. I dunno. Maybe you prefer not being alive.

['Maybe you prefer not being alive'? Oh boy she still does not get it. Well, he could explain himself but Zidane feels like being petty.]

You think so? Awww maybe you're kinda the same? I mean, if we're talking about prioritizing then by your logic you're wasting your time lecturing and making assumptions about a guy you're talking to the first time and haven't even personally met. Shouldn't you be out hunting instead? I mean, those monsters aren't gonna magically appear on your doorstep and say, "Hey! Eat me!"

Or maybe you're worried about me? I mean I'm flattered but I've been through far worse. I can take care of myself.

[She doesn't get a lot of things, but she does know when she's being goddamn mocked.]

[If she was delivering this in person, this is the point where she'd be jabbing him in the chest with her finger.]

But there are lots of idiots who would rather do this than take care of their damn selves. So you have to pay attention so they get it too.

[GEEZ FINE. Since mocking and passive aggressiveness didn't work he'll start being serious.]

You know what? You need to calm the hell down! You can't control what every single person does when they come to this place, but you sure aren't gonna get your point across by being a party pooper! People are gonna handle the dangers here in whatever way they want and you can't stop all of 'em from doing something stupid.

All you can do is protect as many of them as you can. Looking down of them for having fun sure won't get them to sit down and get their acts together.

[She grumbles across the line, a frustrated noise that's partially for his words and partially because he isn't getting the point. This would be easier if she let herself communicate a little better, but she's feeling a little bit like she's thrown that one out the window.]

It's not looking down on them! You're-- augh!

[Beau forces herself to take a breath off the line, brain rattling around as she tries to calm herself. She can do this. She spoke well in a situation to save all of her friend's lives, she's brokered powerful alliances, why can't she just talk to some dude? This feels stupid.]

What I'm trying to say is, if you're gonna be a leader, it's your job to look out for people. Make sure they're taking care of themselves. If people trust you, and you're gonna be doing something to make people trust you, don't be an ass and not care. Okay?

[Well that's... something.]

[.......So that is what she is trying to say? That if he sets up a theatre, he needs to look out to make sure everyone is safe? Well, that is obvious to Zidane, who would never forgive himself if someone else, especially a friend, died and he did not do anything about it, even if it meant putting his own life at risk. But does he really come across as uncaring? He isn't sure why Beau would come to that conclusion. But maybe she isn't as arrogant as he thought she was.

His tone softens when he speaks.] Of course you have to look out for others if you're a leader. [Which he has been considering he's the protagonist of a Final Fantasy game] But making sure they look after themselves is more than making sure they eat and don't get killed, you know? They need the motivation to keep going in a place like this too. That's what I mean when I said that survival isn't just about having basic needs and protecting yourself. A leader needs to do that......[And then he remembers how his team helped him pull through when he fell into despair.]....no, everyone needs to help each other with that.

[Any kind of softening towards her instantly makes her want to throw up all her walls again, but seeing as she is actually trying to stop doing exactly that, she grits her teeth and listens to him.]

I know, it's... culture, life, whatever. There's just a lot of fools around here who'll throw themselves into damn anything without thinking of themselves. Just a damn lot.

[Not that she's very pointedly thinking of anyone here, nooooo, she doesn't care.]

[Unfortunately for Beau, Zidane is perceptive enough to realise that maybe, maybe, she really is just worried about others. And isn't going about it in the right way.] A lot of them are probably trying to cope with being stuck here. I mean, it's one thing being far from what you're used to but it's another being told you can't go back. And while I'll buy that they still need to take care of themselves and a number of them probably don't, you can't stop them all from being reckless. Not on your own, anyway. That and saying they need to focus on basic survival won't cut it. It won't cure homesickness and despair.

But that's kinda why I thought of the theater thing. [Well, apart from the fact he's trying to distract himself from being homesick but while Zidane knows he needs to let his own walls down and get better at talking to people about stuff that bothers him, he's not going to talk about missing the people he cares about on Gaia to a stranger.] It's more than just for fun. It brings people together - makes them bond over something they like and helps them realise they aren't alone. And that'll give them motivation to survive here.

I mean, it's not the only way to bring people together and it's not gonna be a magical cure. And I admit it's not gonna work for everyone. And I'm all ears for any other ideas if you've got any. But you know what? I'm willing to go out on a limb and bet the Denny was made with the same idea in mind.

[Nothing about Beau is ever going about things the right way. It's about going at things the wrong way so often it eventually becomes some kind of path until she hits the wall of what should be a moral decision. It's worked so far, and by 'worked', she means 'hasn't killed her'. All of this is to say, she's scowling at her stone as he speaks, even if she isn't yelling until he's done.]

I mean, the Denny was made with an idea that everybody needed a goddamn drink, which is still true.

[But she gets what he's saying, even if she dislikes hearing a stranger peg her like this.]

I dunno. Doesn't feel like you could make anything here. 'Ss not home. Should't be, y'know? We're all gonna leave eventually.

[Beau inhales, like she's conceding at gunpoint.]

But I guess we need stuff to do in the meantime. So we don't just go crazy.
