Hey there, islands. Happy new year and all that, if that even matters. I mean, the holidays don't seem to matter here but there's a calendar so...?

[There's a pause, and Lance clears his throat.]

Anyways, this isn't about that! Recently I put in a request with the good ol' Storyteller because I was reminded of something from back home and thought, with all the crazy things that happen here, something that's a little more chill and lowkey might be good?

It's this, uh, game? Called Monsters & Mana. It's a little hard to explain and it's super nerdy, but it's pretty fun! You roll dice and pretend to be a character and go on an adventure the Lore Master puts together for you.

I've got a lot of books for it and everything we'd need to play it, but I don't want to just keep it to myself? So if anyone wants to take a look at it or play it just hit me up!

If Shiro wants to be a Paladin let him be one. I'm not going to stamp on his good time. [Let Shiro say fuck so to speak.]

And yeah, I'll play. I do know how to have fun, you know.

Yeah, your fun is getting the crap kicked out of you fighting the simulation bots, but we don't have any of those out here. [He's onto you, Keith.]

But how does he not get bored?

Ask him? And you're right we don't have any of those out here. I spar with people instead. Cut loose if both parties agree with it. [He isn't ashamed of what he does to unwind.]

[Lance blows a raspberry.]

Sheesh. Don't know what I was expecting.

Hey. You guessed, I confirmed. [His tone is slightly defensive, their usual game is beginning again.]

We can't fly or ride here. That's the best I've got.

[Perfect.]

The best you've got is pretty bad, man. Fighting isn't taking a break. You really need to loosen up a little, man. Maybe go swimming.

[He snorts.] I do swim and climb trees. It's part of life around here.

[Sometimes he thinks he fits in around here a little too well. Most predators and prey know he's around and see him as another predator. ...it feels natural.]

We're getting off track. Tell me a little more about this game. We create characters, roll dice...how do the adventures work?

That's not- [Uuuugh.] You know what, never mind. Just. Never mind.

[He can explain this much, at least!]

The lore master is the person who sets it all up - your characters have some sort of objective they need to fulfill, and you get to fight monsters and solve puzzles and do all sorts of things in order to complete your quests!

[He snorts. Point to him.]

How does the pretending to be your character you make factor in? [He's back to sounding curious and eager. Look. It sounds like fun.]

[Nope, no points. That's not how this works.]

Well, you can't just do what you want to do. You gotta do what your character would do!

[That's totally how this works. If they were cats he'd be the one with his paw held up ready to keep bapping.]

I got that part. So, you build someone else and send them on adventures and deal it based on their thoughts?

[It is NOT!!]

Basically. They'll have different skills or abilities that'll help out the party, and you get to do whatever you want.

[A pause.]

I'd bet you make something super edgy.

Yeah? And what did you make? Some sort of dashing thief ninja?

[Bap.]

So we makeup people, set up their skills, and have fun together. No wonder all of you like it so much. We're friends so that makes it more fun.

Uh, they were a master assassin, thank you. Not a thief!

[He Was A Thief.]

Yeah. It's a shame you didn't get to play with us.

Yeah, it’s a shame I didn’t get that blind run with you guys. But we can play it together now and make our own memories with it. [He pauses and adds a gentleness to his tone that hasn’t been there before.]

And I wouldn’t have been as much fun then. This way, I’ve found myself and we can really just enjoy it.

[Aww, Keith is being sentimental. It's...nice to see, in a way.]

Yeah, yeah, we can do all that mushy stuff. But most importantly, we don't have to worry about all the monsters just being Coran.

[Silence.] ...wait, what? Coran as every monster??

He was the Lore Master.

[That's all the explanation you're getting.]

[He's just confused by that one. What the hell does that mean? Wait.]

...then he has no room to complain if Shiro always wants to be a Paladin.

There's plenty of room to complain about Shiro always being a paladin. And dying all the time!

At least it isn't like...an orange mustache on every enemy. And deaths are the result of bad dice rolls, right?

If you imagine the enemy with an orange mustache, they've got an orange mustache.

[There's a pause.]

And usually, but sometimes you just grab a cursed sword and get torched.

How was he to know it was cursed? [Look. It's a legit question.] And what did you imagine the enemies as then?

Like the ones in Pidge's video game?
