Only because there was no cure.

They built those automatons instead of just abandoning the sick. Someone must have cared.

'Someone' did abandon them. They just did it in a way that appeased their guilt.

But now the living and dead are both gone, and their quarantine has been broken.

[Is that a hint of... excitement?]

[Impossible for him to pick that up from writing, although one may be able to catch the skeleton visiting the message rock a couple times every day. No, he doesn't have anything better to do.]

Those machines can't have been cheap to make. Had to have been more than guilt. It would have been easier to dump them them somewhere with nothing at all. Too easy for people to ignore things that upset them. Out of sight, out of mind.

[It's not like he has personal experience with large groups of people being ignored while withering away or anything!!]

Maybe it's not too late to stay off the island.

Yes, it would have been easier to abandon them with nothing. But shame is free! Guilt is expensive.

[Funny, Foster's experience is with one person withering away while large groups of people gathered around to watch or participate.]

But I'm not afraid of contamination. What's one more disease? Nothing of me will be lost!

[Death is coming. Death is coming. Pass him a hot dog appropriate vegetarian alternative.]

[Next time he visits the rock, he doesn't bother writing anything in response. It's not an argument he can win, obviously. You, señor, have some serious issues.

He'll be irritably cleaning up Foster's mess with his precious soap instead. Blood. Actual blood, something no skeleton has. He didn't miss seeing blood, thanks. Biohazard isn't part of his vocabulary, really, but por Dios, there are children present!!]
